THE MOBILE PHONE MARKET WAR IN INDIA

The year 2010 is almost like a world war for mobile phone manufacturers! Yes. It is actually the war between the two top mobile phone manufacturers Nokia and Samsung.

GREAT MARKET CAPTURE BY SAMSUNG

Till 2008, Samsung is not a dominant market leader in India. Only Nokia is leading in markets. Nokia dominated both higher end and lower end mobile versions. But from 2009, people started looking at Samsung models mainly because of its aesthetic look and additional features compared to Nokia. Especially the feature called Mobile Tracker introduced by Samsung attracted a lot. This feature alerts the friend of the Samsung mobile holder in case the Sim card is replaced by a third person who may be a thief sometimes. This useful feature attracted lot of people since mobile theft is very common in India.

Later, Samsung introduced its version called Corby which is a grand success model in India. It introduced versions called Corby Pro, Corby Plus etc. The latest version Corby B5310 has a very good and appealing appearance and got added features too. Other than Corby models, Samsung Guru is the success model for lower end mobile versions.

The key behind the success of Samsung is its affordable price and comparable features with other mobile manufacturers.

NOKIA GETTING A DIP IN MARKET SHARES

Nokia, once considered as the leader of mobile market in India is now actually losing its market shares because of release of new higher end versions from Samsung. After introduction of Samsung Corby, Nokia is struggling to recapture its market. After introduction of its 'N' series, Nokia started gaining its market. But once Samsung introduced its Corby, again the struggle started for Nokia. Now Nokia recently introduced its higher end model N8 which may challenge the market share of Samsung Corby. But still, the Nokia N8 price is around Rs.22,000 in India which is not affordable to everybody. Even if one compare the model Nokia N96 and Samsung S8300, almost all features of Nokia are available in Samsung also with a 20% lower price difference compared to Nokia. Even it contains additional features like OLED screen, 8MP camera (Nokia N96 has only 5MP camera), light weight etc.

Especially, Nokia need to concentrate in reducing the weight of mobile phones which may also be a key factor for its failure in Indian mobile phone market recent days.
